It's not an easy decision, but I've closed the shop on my website after giving up my photography side business. It was just too much maintenance and no revenue.
I've been honest with myself about this for a while now. I put effort into curating, listing images and maintaining the shop, but unfortunately sold just one picture through the shop during all those years (thank you to the customer in Denmark!). A photography business needs customers, and finding them takes time and money.
That brings me to the second reason: time. Photography, even as a side business, demands more than making good pictures. It requires a well-thought-out portfolio, applying for exhibitions, writing artist statements, marketing on social media and the list goes on and on. Besides that, there is a day job and everyday life to manage.
A thing I was afraid of was making a hobby into a business. You spend more time managing the business than doing the thing you actually love. And all the maybes... "Maybe my images aren't good enough?", "Maybe I should invest more time and money?", "Maybe I should get this exhibition thing going?".
So here's what's next. I'm shifting my focus to writing about photography. I want to write about my experiences shooting in the field, about the process of printing and why it matters. I want to write about collecting photobooks, which has become one of my favourite things.
If you've been following my work and still want to buy a framed print (30×30cm or 40×30cm, depending on the image)... you can! Feel free to send me an inquiry. And if you just want to see new photos, I'll update the portfolio and I'm planning to do a bit of behind-the-scenes content.
